About McCrillis Gardens

McCrillis Gardens is a naturalistic garden, offering shady woodland walks and splashes of color, especially in spring. Tucked into a residential neighborhood in Bethesda, the five-acre property was donated to the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission in 1978 by its owners, William and Virginia McCrillis, and is managed by Brookside Gardens.

The Gardens feature paths that wind through the remarkable collection of ornamental trees and shrubs, along with bulbs, groundcovers and shade-loving perennials that add year-round color and texture. A pavilion and benches provide restful vantage points. McCrillis Gardens is reminiscent of a secret garden, hidden in the heart of Bethesda!

Stunningly beautiful gardens, enormously diverse floral, rare plants/trees and hybrids galore. The only thing more abundant than the shades of hydrangea would be the clouds of mosquitos that smack you in the face every few steps. I must have swallowed a dozen or more mid-sentence and struggled to keep them from blinding me as they attempted to swarm my eyes when my mouth wasn't available for them to try to take me down like the scarabs devoured that one guy in the first Mummy movie. The one with Brendan Fraser, you know the scene. No bathroom. Park at the school across the street and try not to think about the extreme concentration of wealth and the utter surveillance state residents live in due to the obscene number of flock cameras in addition to the private security cameras posted everywhere. Its right across the water from the CIA so they're likely conducting psychological experiments upon the unwitting nearby residents, also you will be lucky to get a cell signal despite it being a place where cell towers are quite literally everywhere. Be prepared to feel sad angry jealous abd disgusted at the opulence displayed in the area before the natural beauty transports you back to 1

We had a very enjoyable and informative tour today. This is a nice relaxing place to visit for a quiet stroll through the 5 acres of carefully maintained and manicured trees and bushes.

Across from a school and in a residential neighborhood, McCrillis Gardens feels like the "hidden gem" the Washingtonian Magazine once claimed it to be. Visiting on a Monday morning, here's my experience. 1) Entrance: Good thing there's clear signage. Otherwise, it would be easy to miss. When you walk in, there's a roundabout in front of an old house. The garden is behind the house. In case you miss the signs or the staff furiously yelling at you, you can't park here. Some park across the street at the school or you can find street parking along nearby Renshaw Drive. 2) Gardens: Go in the spring when flowers are in bloom. There are trails, benches, and other areas to find stillness.

Absolutely gorgeous here. It’s free and no parking inside. But they have lots of plants and trails to walk around and lots of benches to rest! Super nice place for wandering and relaxing.

McCrillis Gardens is such a beautiful location! I've photographed families, couples, and graduation portraits so many times here. The blooms in the spring/summer are soooo gorgeousl. In the fall this places looks as beautiful with all the colorful leaves on the huge trees around and all over the ground. In the winter, it looks perfectly covered in snow. Every season, this place is so unique. I also really love this location because it's quiet and not a lot of people are around. Parking is super easy, you can park in the neighborhood or at the academy across from the garden. It's less than a minute walk.
